Cables and Ports, Explained Simply

Why two identical-looking USB-C cables behave completely differently.

At a glance

  • →Connector shape says nothing about capability
  • →Swap the cable first when diagnosing
  • →Ports on one device are not equal

USB-C is a shape, not a promise. Two cables with the same connector can differ enormously: one may only carry power slowly, another may carry fast charging, high-speed data and a video signal. Nothing on the outside tells you which is which.

That is why a device charges with one cable and not another, or why an external monitor works only when plugged into a specific port on a laptop.

Ports have the same problem. Manufacturers often give one port full capability and make the others power-and-basic-data only, marking the difference with a tiny symbol most people never notice.

Common causes

  • A charge-only cable used for data
  • A slow cable used for fast charging
  • Video sent through a port that does not support it
  • Worn connectors and bent pins
  • Unpowered hubs sharing too little power

Troubleshooting tips

  1. 1Keep the cable that came with the device for charging that device.
  2. 2When something fails, swap the cable before anything else.
  3. 3Look for small symbols next to laptop ports indicating video or fast data.
  4. 4Use a powered hub when connecting several devices.
  5. 5Inspect connectors for dust and bent pins under a light.
  6. 6Label good cables — they are indistinguishable once in a drawer.

Key takeaways

  • • Connector shape says nothing about capability
  • • Swap the cable first when diagnosing
  • • Ports on one device are not equal
