Not All USB-C Cables Are Equal

Identical-looking cables carry very different power and data capability, which explains slow charging.

At a glance

  • →The connector shape says nothing about capability.
  • →The weakest component sets the charging speed.
  • →Intermittent cables are failing and should be replaced.

USB-C is a connector shape, not a capability. Two cables that look identical can differ hugely: one may carry only slow charging and old-style data, the other high wattage and fast transfer.

Charging speed is negotiated between charger, cable and device. The slowest link sets the result, so a fast charger and a fast phone still charge slowly on a basic cable.

Data is separate again. Many charging cables contain no high-speed data wires at all, which is why a phone charges from a cable that refuses to show up on a computer or drive an external display.

Cables also wear internally. A cable that charges intermittently when moved has broken conductors and should be replaced rather than nursed along.

Common causes

  • A charge-only cable used for data or display
  • A low-wattage cable limiting a fast charger
  • Charger and device supporting different fast-charge standards
  • Internal wire damage from bending near the connector
  • A dirty or worn port reducing contact

Troubleshooting tips

  1. 1Keep one known-good high-capability cable for testing.
  2. 2Match charger wattage to the device's supported rate.
  3. 3Label charge-only cables so they are not used for data.
  4. 4Replace cables that only work at a certain angle.
  5. 5Clean lint out of the port before blaming the cable.

Key takeaways

  • • The connector shape says nothing about capability.
  • • The weakest component sets the charging speed.
  • • Intermittent cables are failing and should be replaced.
